They Stood

It was a bright sunny evening. Out walked an old tired man, someone who'd been beaten down by life. Over the speakers came a booming voice that told the story of this man. A man who had been through a living hell in the jungles on Southeast Asia.

No one in the crowd knew this man before the night started. By time the PA announcer was finish grown men were crying. The 10,000 in the crowd stood as one and gave the old man his due. They welcomed him home the way he wasn't forty years ago.

I'm surprised nobody has commented on this. I really loved the last line, the suggestion that the man wasn't appreciated as he should have been earlier in his life.
Nicely done.
