"The masses are not asses. They will figure it out," he said. He was standing before 3000 of the best young minds that the party could bring together. These were his shock troops. They were the ones that he was counting on to win him the election. His plan was simple. Use these young kids to go door to door explaining his policy and views. He knew that if he used the media he was dead in the water because, "The masses are not asses. They will figure it out." He had no policy or views just the 3000.

I like the message you're trying to convey here. What's it going to take for the 3000 to figure it out, I wonder! :) I wonder if some concrete images would help the reader see the scene even further.
Two nitpicky things: "he said" is past tense, but the rest of the story is in present tense. My personal pet peeve is the word "that." If I can leave it out, I do. Do you need it in every instance you use it?
