Stream

Weeks ago the stream rushed, full of fresh-melted snow. Walking through the cold waters without falling was a challenge for spry youth and healthy adult alike. People gathered to watch the eroding banks of the stream succumb to the powerful water.

Today the stream suppresses its jealousy of babbling brooks. One hardly notices the meager splash made when hiking boot meets stream bed. The future may provide a nourishing rain, but the stream will never return to its prior majesty. At least not in this lifetime.

The lifetime of a stream is plenty different from that of a human! :)

This reminds me of the section of the Minnesota River running near / through Mankato. Sometimes, it's overflowing, and sometimes, it's nearly bare.

"Walking through the cold waters without falling" strikes me as a long, awkward sentence subject, but I like what you're trying to get at with it.
